All abilities football in WA has its origins in 2008/09 where several Perth senior community football clubs identified a need for players with an intellectual disability who love the game of footy. The program was launched as Integrated Football.

Integrated Football grew and evolved from Come-N-Try Days to facilitating a yearly football league with players part of local Perth Football League clubs.

Today, the program retains its participation and development origins but has a strong competitive element where players can strive and have the same opportunities as abled players.

In 2013, an All-Stars match was  launched which was played as a curtain-raiser to an AFL match.  The All Stars match created a development pathway opportunity for players to represent their state and in 2015 a WA State Team was selected to participate at the AFL National Inclusion Carnival in Melbourne.

We believe the game of football (with its highs and lows) together with being part of a team within a local community club builds an individual’s –

  • Independence: Participants become well organised and reliable as to train, play and help around the club.

  • Well being: Participants become physically and mentally fitter.

  • Self-esteem: Participants have greater confidence and pride as part of a team and larger club.

  • Life skills: Participants learn develop decision making skills, develop interpersonal relationships, learn to cope and become resilient.

The WA All Abilities Football Association was established by the Perth Football League in 2019 so everybody gets to play Australia’s game.

The Association will go beyond the Perth metropolitan area and into country WA. It will not only continue to encourage people with an intellectual disability to be involved but people with a physical disability through AFL Blind and AFL Wheelchair.

The Association is a charity registered with the Australian Charities and Not-Fot-Profit Commission. It has been endorsed by the ATO as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR).
