A Message from All Abilities Executive Officer

As we reflect on the events and achievements of 2023, this has been a monumental year for the WA All Abilities Football Association. The theme that encapsulates our endeavours is "building and connection."  We have focused on constructing not only programs and events but, more importantly, meaningful relationships with stakeholders and communities throughout Western Australia.

One of the many highlights of the year was our engagement with our Foundation partners including Perth Football League, West Coast Eagles. Through the West Coast Eagles’ Festival of Footy, Perth Football League Integrated Competition, the Purple Hands Crossing for Inclusion and Kimberly 9’s in Broome, it has been an outstanding year of collaboration. This Kimberley 9’s activation allowed us to connect with students from the community with diverse abilities, in an inclusive environment for them to participate in the sport we for all—footy. We continue with our participants, demonstrate our commitment to breaking down barriers and creating community connection alongside choice and identity.

Our wheelchair footy season has been on a steady upward trajectory, and 2023 witnessed remarkable growth. Welcoming new teams, including the West Coast Eagles, into the fold is a testament to the increasing popularity and acceptance of wheelchair football. This inclusive approach not only enriches the sport but also promotes a sense of unity and camaraderie among participants.

The success of our state AFL Inclusion Football Team in Queensland and WA Wheelchair football team in Melbourne further underscored our commitment to pathway and excellence. The outstanding results achieved reflect the dedication and talent of our athletes and supports, showcasing the capabilities of individuals with diverse abilities on a broader stage.

Our school carnivals, another cornerstone of our efforts, have experienced unprecedented growth in 2023. The record number of students participating is a clear indication of the positive impact we are having on communities. These events not only provide a platform for friendly competition but also serve as a vehicle for promoting understanding and acceptance among students.

In conclusion, the year 2023 has been a year of building—building and connecting relationships, building and connecting opportunities, and building a more inclusive future. We are immensely proud of our continued development, and we remain focussed on our commitment to creating a community where every individual, regardless of ability, is embraced and empowered. As we look ahead, we are excited about the continued growth and positive impact we can achieve together.
